The procedure to assess compliance with Mexican Official Standard NOM-006-SCFI-2012 regarding Tequila, was published
On May 10th, 2022 the procedure to assess compliance with the Mexican Official Standard NOM-006-SCFI-2012, Alcoholic beverages-Tequila-Specifications (the “Tequila Evaluation Procedure”) was published in the Federal Official Gazette.
NOM-006-SCFI-2012, Bebidas alcohólicas-Tequila-Especificaciones (the “NOM006”) sets forth, among others, the technical specifications and requirements to be complied in order to protect the “Tequila” denomination of origin, and it applies to all activities in the tequilana weber blue agave supply and the production, bottling, commercialization, labelling and commercial practices related to the “Tequila” alcoholic beverage. In other words, an alcoholic beverage may be deemed “Tequila” only if it complies with NOM006.
The Tequila Evaluation Procedure sets forth the specific procedures for sampling, testing, calibration, certification and inspection to be followed to comply with NOM006. The Tequila Evaluation Procedure will be performed by evaluation organizations duly registered by the authorities (e.g. Tequila Regulator Council – Consejo Regulador del Tequila – CRT).
Moreover, the Tequila Evaluation Procedure sets forth the requirements to be met to obtain the corresponding certification as well as the in situ follow up procedure for such certification. The Tequila Evaluation Procedure must be followed by producers, bottlers (including bottlers which are not authorized as Producers), and exporters, among others.
The Tequila Evaluation Procedure will enter into force in 180 calendar days.
